So you want to catch some fish? Well then, let's talk fishing. Maybe I can make it easier for you with some knowledge of the surrounding rivers and lakes.
Lets start with the best time to fish this area. All summer is excellent, but I prefer mid-June after the runoff, or late August - early September. During these times you can find solitude on the river and the fish aren't as easily spooked. The Rio Grande definitely fishes better starting late September through the fall.
Listed below are some hot spots. Remember there is always better fishing around the next bend and the next pool may hold the big one. Also remember that catching is only half the fun - getting out and enjoying the outdoors, spending time with a friend, or even teaching someone else the joys of fishing makes it all worthwhile. I hope this article helps you find the right place, by the perfect river and it makes your vacation great.
Rivers, Lakes & Streams
Upper Red River - Fishing in the beaver ponds above the Upper Valley is excellent for brooks and stocked rainbows. Between town and Upper Valley there is a 1-mile section of designated special trout waters. There is a 2 fish limit with a single hook. Very good for 12 to 18 inch rainbows.
Red River - Fishing through town is excellent, but not good for the solitude that I desire when I fish. The best fishing is under bridges and around bushes. All the fishing is open unless marked otherwise. Below town is good also, especially below Fawn Lakes. You will typically catch 12 to 14 inch rainbows, but you might also hook one of the 4 to 6 pounders that the Red River Chamber stocks.
